Get Unstuck

With 1:1 coaching, I help you to:

➟ build healthier habits

➟ shift mindset to WANT to be sober

➟ do in 4 months what took me 4 years

My approach

My approach draws influence from the mindfulness-based addiction recovery (MBAR) model, developed by an NHS doctor and a Buddhist leader. MBAR is endorsed by world-renowned addiction expert Dr Gabor Maté.

Why mindfulness?

Traditional recovery programmes have a relapse rate as high as 60% in the first year. [mindfulness & substance use, NLM 2018 study]

Mindfulness rewires the brain, so that you get to a point where you're at ease without using substances.

the secret of change is to focus all your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new

DREAM method ™

If there's one thing I've learned over the past few years, it is exactly that.

Substance use can not only wreak havoc in every area of life – health, relationships, finances, career. It can cause you to forget all about the dreams you once had. Dreams that are actually within your reach.

That's why I developed my DREAM method ™ – a coaching framework with five pillars to help you shift to a healthier lifestyle:

➟ Discovery: reconnect with your life vision

➟ Reflection: on your barriers to reaching it

➟ Exploration: values + triggers + options

➟ Action: create the conditions for change

➟ Maintenance: relapse prevention plan

Work with Hamish

"I was drinking enough alcohol to kill a small animal. I've done therapy. I've done counselling. Those are great. But I needed help living my life in a healthy way. Hamish knew what I was thinking. He knew what I was going through. I haven't touched a drop of alcohol in 6 months now [and counting]"

Frequently asked questions

What is recovery coaching?

A recovery coach supports you in your journey of recovery from addiction or other life challenges. We provide support and accountability to help you achieve positive long-term change and to be stronger, happier and healthier.

Is this a substitute for therapy?

No, recovery coaching is not a substitute. But it can complement therapy, or work well afterwards, as it is forward-looking and action-focused.

How does recovery coaching differ from therapy or counseling?

Recovery coaching focuses on specific goals related to personal growth and is about the present and the future. Therapy, on the other hand, usually explores underlying psychological issues, with a significant focus on past events.

Who can benefit from recovery coaching?

Anyone who is committed to overcoming addiction or compulsive behaviours, or committed to making positive changes. This includes individuals in early recovery, those who have relapsed, anyone seeking to maintain long-term sobriety, or anyone affected by bad habits who is looking to live a healthier and happier life.

Who do you help?

I primarily help men who have already engaged with therapy or a recovery programme in some way. But I am open to working with people from all backgrounds; please don't hesitate to get in touch.

How often do we meet for coaching sessions?

My signature programme Get Unstuck is 12 weekly sessions over three months. However, I appreciate that in some cases fortnightly or monthly sessions might be more suitable. I'm flexible and open to discussing this.

Where do coaching sessions take place?

The majority of my coaching sessions take place online, via Zoom or Google Meet. If you are based in London and would prefer to meet in person, let me know and we can arrange this.

Do I need to be sober to start working with you?

No. We will work together to create your bespoke plan to move towards a lifestyle that supports sobriety. In some cases, sobriety might not be your goal, or what you feel you need. And that's ok.

What if I relapse during the programme?

That's ok. You're human. Relapse is a part of the process. We'll start by practicing acceptance and forgiveness. Then we'll work together to understand your triggers and develop new strategies. My coaching is about looking forwards, not backwards.

What is mindfulness-based addiction recovery (MBAR)?

It is an approach to recovery developed by an NHS physician (specialising in addiction) and a Buddhist leader (Chair of the Vancouver Buddhist Centre). MBAR is endorsed by world-renowned addiction expert Dr Gabor Maté.

What does the mindfulness approach mean for your programme?

It means starting and ending each session with a 3-minute breathing exercise. This is optional but highly recommended. It also means focusing heavily on mindfulness-based activities which have been proven to support long-term behavioural change.

How do I sign up?

Fill in the application form below – then I'll be in touch (usually within 24hrs) to book your free 30min discovery call.
